Center-Based ABA Therapy

A Structured Environment Designed for Growth

Center-based ABA therapy delivers one-on-one applied behavior analysis sessions in a purpose-built clinical setting. For children with autism, the consistency and structure of a center environment can accelerate skill-building in communication, social interaction, and school readiness — while keeping therapy engaging through play-based activities.

What a Center-Based ABA Session Looks Like

A Nurturing Space Designed for Growth and Success

A typical center-based ABA session is structured but flexible. Your child works one-on-one with a Registered Behavior Technician (RBT) under the supervision of a Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA). Sessions blend skill-building activities with play, breaks, and reinforcement — keeping engagement high while making real progress on individualized goals.

Therapy rooms are designed to minimize distraction while feeling welcoming and child-friendly. Sessions typically run 2-6 hours depending on your child's age and clinical recommendation, with snack breaks, free play, and social opportunities built in.

  • One-on-one with a trained RBT, supervised by a BCBA
  • Structured activities tailored to your child's treatment plan
  • Built-in breaks, play, and reinforcement
  • Opportunities for peer interaction (when appropriate to goals)

Melissa MacDougall

I hardly do reviews but I had to take the time to give much deserved accolades to Kelly! While getting my son tested for Autism she was absolutely amazing. It’s very rare he engages with anyone and she made him feel so comfortable that he opened up like a book. She had so many suggestions to help me with his day to day as well as at school and they have been such a game changer for him.

Keahri Woods

We are beyond grateful for the exceptional care and support our son received. Their dedication and expertise in ABA therapy have truly transformed our family’s journey. Our BCBA provided invaluable strategies that gave us confidence in managing daily challenges, while our RBT built an incredible bond with our son, helping him thrive.

A Nurturing Space Designed for Growth and Success

From there, we create a personalized plan that fits their world—not the other way around.

Center-Based vs. In-Home vs. School-Based ABA Therapy

ABA therapy can be delivered in different settings, and each one has strengths. Choosing the right model depends on your child's age, goals, and family circumstances. Here's how the three main settings compare.

Center-Based ABA In-Home ABA School-Based ABA
Where it happens Our purpose-built Charlotte clinic Your child's home (or grandparents', daycare, etc.) Your child's school during the school day
Best for Children who thrive with structure, need low distraction, or benefit from peer interaction Younger children, daily-living skills, family routines, or families without nearby clinic access School-age children with classroom-specific challenges (transitions, attention, peer interactions)
Session length 2 to 6 hours per day, often 3 to 5 days per week 2 to 4 hours per session, scheduled around family routines Embedded in the school day, typically 1 to 3 hours
Key benefits Distraction-free environment, peer interaction, direct BCBA oversight, specialized equipment, consistent routine Skills generalize to real-life settings, parent involvement built in, comfortable familiar environment, no commute Targets skills in the setting where they're needed, supports IEP goals, collaboration with teachers
Things to consider Requires travel to the clinic. Limited generalization to home routines without parent training. More environmental distractions. Requires a quiet workspace at home. Limited hours. Depends on school cooperation and scheduling.
Parent involvement Parent training sessions; observation windows; home practice between sessions High — parents often observe and participate in sessions directly Moderate — collaboration via meetings, progress reports, and home practice

Many families choose a combination of settings over the course of their child's care — for example, beginning with center-based therapy for foundational skills, then layering in school-based therapy as the child enters kindergarten, with periodic in-home sessions to support family routines. Our BCBAs help you decide what's right based on your child's clinical assessment and your family's day-to-day life.

Not Sure Center-Based ABA Is Right? Explore Other Options

Center-based ABA therapy is one of three main ways we deliver applied behavior analysis at Connect n Care. Depending on your child's age, goals, and your family's circumstances, another setting may be a better starting point — or a useful complement to center-based work.

In-Home ABA Therapy

Personalized therapy delivered in your child's home, where skills generalize naturally to daily routines like mealtimes, bedtime, and sibling interactions. Best for younger children, family-routine goals, or families without convenient clinic access.

School-Based ABA Therapy

Our BCBAs partner with Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools, Cabarrus County Schools, and other Charlotte-area districts to support your child's IEP, 504 plan, and classroom success — embedded in the actual school environment where challenges show up.

Parent Training & Telehealth

Whether your child receives center-based, in-home, or school-based services, ABA works best when caregivers are equipped with the strategies that match what's happening in therapy. We offer dedicated parent training programs and virtual consultations for families across North Carolina.

FAQs about ABA therapy at our Charlotte clinic

  • What age groups do you work with at your clinic?

We specialize in working with children between the ages of 2 and 12. Whether your child is just beginning to speak or already in elementary school, we create personalized ABA therapy plans that meet them where they are developmentally and help them grow at their own pace.

  • Is there a waitlist to begin services?

No! We understand that early intervention is critical, so we do everything we can to get your child started with services as soon as possible. Once your intake paperwork is complete and insurance is verified, we’ll schedule an evaluation and begin services right away.

  • What is the difference between in-home and center-based ABA therapy?

Center-based ABA therapy provides a structured, distraction-free setting that’s designed specifically for learning and development. In this environment, your child can focus fully on skill-building activities like communication, social interaction, behavior regulation, and school readiness, with support from trained therapists and the chance to interact with peers.

While in-home ABA therapy is great for working on everyday routines and involving the whole family, some children benefit more from the consistency and clear boundaries of a clinic setting.

At Connect n Care ABA, we offer both options and will work closely with you to choose the approach that best fits your child’s needs and learning style. It’s all about what helps your child thrive.

  • What qualifications do your therapists have?

All of our therapists are highly trained and certified. Your child will work with:

    • Board Certified Behavior Analysts (BCBAs): Master’s-level clinicians who assess your child and develop their therapy plan.
    • Registered Behavior Technicians (RBTs): Certified professionals who provide one-on-one therapy under the supervision of a BCBA.

Our team receives ongoing training and follows evidence-based practices to deliver the highest standard of care.

  • Do you offer autism diagnostic evaluations?

Yes, we do. If your child hasn’t received a formal autism diagnosis yet, we can help. Our team includes qualified professionals who can perform diagnostic evaluations and provide you with the documentation needed to begin ABA therapy services. We’ll guide you through the entire process—from assessment to next steps.

  • How does ABA therapy work?

ABA therapy, or Applied Behavior Analysis, uses positive reinforcement to encourage desired behaviors and reduce challenging ones. By breaking down skills into small, manageable steps, therapists help individuals with autism develop communication, social, and daily living skills. It’s highly personalized, often involving family, and can take place in settings like home, school, or clinics.

  • How will my child gain from center-based ABA therapy?

In center-based ABA therapy, your child benefits from a structured, distraction-free environment with access to specialized resources and social opportunities. Therapists focus on skill-building in communication, behavior management, and socialization, promoting readiness for school and daily life. Sessions are personalized, with consistent routines and hands-on learning to support steady progress.

  • What areas does your ABA therapy center serve?

We are proud to provide expert and compassionate center-based ABA therapy services to families in Charlotte, Huntersville, Cornelius, Mooresville, Mt. Holly, Belmont, Gastonia, and Harrisburg. Additionally, we offer home-based ABA therapy throughout North Carolina. Our dedicated team looks forward to supporting your child in achieving essential milestones on their journey.

  • Do you accept insurance for ABA therapy services?

Yes, we work with many insurance providers to offer coverage for ABA therapy services. Our team will assist you in verifying your benefits and understanding your coverage options before starting therapy.

  • How can we get in touch?

You can reach us by phone at 877-262-2221, by email at info@connectncareaba.com, or by connecting with our team online to schedule appointments. We're here to help, so feel free to contact us anytime!
