What Age Is Autism Usually Diagnosed?

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is most often diagnosed between ages 2 and 3, when developmental differences become more noticeable. However, some children may be identified earlier around 18 months if symptoms are clear and parents or doctors recognize early red flags.

Common early signs include delayed speech, limited eye contact, repetitive behaviors, and difficulty responding to their name. Because autism looks different in every child, some may receive a diagnosis later, especially those with milder symptoms or strong coping skills that mask early indicators.

Early detection is vital. The sooner a child is diagnosed, the sooner they can access therapies like Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA), which can help build communication, social, and daily living skills for lifelong success.

At Connect n Care ABA, we provide compassionate, in-home ABA therapy in North Carolina, supporting children and families every step of the way from diagnosis to progress.
