How Functional Behavior Assessments Guide Effective ABA Therapy

A Functional Behavior Assessment, or FBA, is a process used to understand why a child shows certain challenging behaviors

Instead of just asking “What is the behavior?”, an FBA looks deeper and asks, “What purpose does this behavior serve?”

An FBA is commonly used in ABA therapy and school settings to identify triggers, patterns, and the function of behaviors like aggression, tantrums, self-injury, or refusal. The goal isn’t to label a child—it’s to understand them and create a plan that truly helps.

During an FBA, behavior analysts observe the child, collect data, and talk with parents and teachers. They look at what happens before the behavior, what the behavior looks like, and what happens after. This helps determine whether the child is trying to gain attention, escape a task, access something they want, or meet a sensory need.

Once the function is clear, a behavior intervention plan (BIP) can be created. This plan teaches safer, more appropriate ways to communicate needs while reducing challenging behaviors. It’s one of the most important steps in creating effective, individualized ABA treatment.
