Does Humana cover ABA therapy in Virginia?

Yes — and there is usually nothing for you to pay

If your child has an autism diagnosis and a Humana Healthy Horizons card, ABA therapy is covered. Healthy Horizons is one of Virginia's Medicaid plans, and Medicaid does not carry the deductibles and copays that commercial insurance does. The one real hurdle is that Humana has to approve the hours before therapy can start — and that is the part we take off you. Moved across from Molina? Your cover carried over automatically; there is nothing you need to do.

How we work with your plan

How we work with Humana

Healthy Horizons is a Medicaid plan, so there is rarely any money to find. What there is, is paperwork — filed correctly, to the right plan, on time. That is the part we take off you.

We verify first

Give us your Humana details, and we'll confirm exactly what's covered before you commit to therapy. No surprises later about what Humana will or won't pay for.

We submit authorization requests

Humana requires prior authorization for ABA therapy. We know exactly what paperwork they need, how to format it, and who to follow up with when they're slow to respond.

We break down your costs

Before therapy begins, you'll know exactly what Humana will cover and what you'll need to pay. Real numbers, not estimates.

We handle the administrative chaos

Submitting claims, resubmitting when paperwork is missing, appealing denials — Connect n Care ABA handles everything so you don't have to.

Humana questions we hear most

What Virginia families ask us

No. Molina Healthcare of Virginia's Cardinal Care contract ended on June 30, 2025 and its members moved to Humana Healthy Horizons automatically on July 1. You kept your Medicaid eligibility and did not need to reapply. If your child was already having ABA therapy, tell us — we re-verify the benefit and file a fresh authorization with Humana so sessions carry on rather than lapsing between plans.

For most families on Virginia Medicaid, nothing. Medicaid does not carry the deductibles and coinsurance that commercial plans do. If your plan applies any cost-sharing at all, you get the figure in writing before the first session rather than on a bill after it.

Yes. Humana funds ABA on the basis of an autism diagnosis from a qualified provider. If your child has already been evaluated, that report is usually enough. If you are still waiting on an evaluation, call us anyway and we will tell you what Humana will need.

The assessment and the authorization set the pace, and both move faster when the diagnostic report is already in hand. We prepare the request, submit it with the BCBA's treatment plan, and follow it through Humana until there is a decision — you are not the one chasing it.

That comes out of the assessment rather than a fixed rule, and any provider quoting a number before meeting your child is guessing. A comprehensive program commonly runs 25 to 40 hours a week; a focused program targeting specific skills usually runs 10 to 25. You will know the approved figure before sessions start.

We appeal, and we do the work. A denial is usually about documentation or the number of hours rather than whether your child qualifies for ABA at all. Virginia gives you appeal rights, and we write the appeal and the clinical justification ourselves. If we think an appeal is unlikely to succeed we will tell you rather than leave you waiting on one.

At home, at your child's school, or both. Humana covers ABA in each setting on the same basis, and in Virginia our team works from the Tysons office across Northern Virginia. Many families use a combination and change the balance as their child progresses.

Yes, and nothing obliges you to leave their list first. Send us the diagnostic report, we will verify the benefit and file a fresh authorization, and you can decide once you have a real start date from each of us to compare.
