High-functioning autism isn’t a formal diagnosis, but it’s often used to describe individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) who have average or above-average intelligence and can manage daily tasks independently. Diagnosis typically begins with developmental screenings during early childhood, especially if social, communication, or behavioral differences are noticed.
A formal evaluation is conducted by a team of specialists, often including psychologists, developmental pediatricians, and speech-language pathologists. They assess areas like social interaction, communication skills, sensory sensitivities, and repetitive behaviors. Standardized tools such as the Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule (ADOS) and Autism Diagnostic Interview-Revised (ADI-R) are commonly used.
Because symptoms can be subtle, especially in those considered “high-functioning,” diagnosis may not occur until later in childhood or even adulthood. Early identification, however, is key to accessing support and services that can improve quality of life.
